Kia Ora, amazing OIS sports coaches

By Belinda Hirst | Posted: Thursday April 30, 2026

Let us start with a big THANK YOU for volunteering to coach/manage one of our OIS sports teams. This is a significant commitment, and we truly value your support, as it takes considerable pressure off the teachers and staff, allowing us to continue running our school sports teams. This term, please reinforce our commitment to giving each player the same amount of attention and time. This is something we work hard on and need your support. Our role is to nurture each child, regardless of their ability.

At OIS, we are a positive behaviour for learning school (PB4L). That means that we constantly encourage students with positive praise and reinforcement. A driving force for this is our school values, IDEAL:

I…

Dare to succeed

Engage with Mana

Act with respect

Learn with purpose

It is really important that our students engage with and demonstrate these values at all times.

We see this aspect of our sports programme as a partnership between you, the school, players and parents. For things to run smoothly, we need each party to play its part.

What you can expect from the school;

  • Selection of teams

  • All money, subs, etc., are handled by the school.

  • Support you if you need help with coaching.

  • Support to deal with any problems regarding players or the parents of players

  • Follow up on any concerns that you have regarding the sport with the organisation

What do we expect from you?

  • Set personal behaviour standards for yourself and those you coach, to follow.

  • Give each player the same amount of attention and time.

  • Provide every player with opportunities to play the game.

  • Never argue with the referee, or make excuses for losing, and never cheat.

  • Always be positive. Never shout at or ridicule players.

  • Respect players’ efforts regardless of whether you have won or lost.

  • Encourage respect for the opposition and officials.

  • Keep winning and losing in perspective with personal challenge and enjoyment.

If there is a problem on the court/field with a student in relation to player conduct, and the teacher in charge of that sport is not there, call time, then remove the player from the field/court. If you are concerned with the team you are playing, then call time or wait for a break and speak respectfully to the official regarding your concern. Please contact the teacher in charge if you have any concerns or questions. The school will then follow this up.

You are responsible for the players learning the skills of the game and managing their active involvement in the competition games.

Thank you again for your time and effort in support of our students
