Principal's Message...

Our Purpose: To prepare students to be active participants who will contribute to their community.

As an action-packed week concludes, it is evident that our students have benefited from a wide array of opportunities. We kicked off with Year 7 science lessons, dissection sessions led by Mr Clark. Students get a hands-on look at a sheep's pluck, exploring the trachea, lungs, and heart. To ensure inclusivity, a digital Minecraft alternative was offered for those who preferred not to participate in the lab. Additionally, the Bike Ready programme, supported by Youthtown and Constable Jay Morris, provided vital bike safety training for the Year 7 classes.

In honour of New Zealand Sign Language Week, our school has prioritised raising awareness and creating opportunities for students to learn and practice NZSL. Supporting students who primarily use NZSL for their learning remains a focus for us. A special thank you goes to Janice Joiner and Tahlia Sherwin for leading these educational efforts within our school community.

We have seen a superb turnout for our interschool sports trials, with many students displaying impressive skills. As final selections are made, we understand that missing out on a team can be a challenge. It is vital that we support students during these times, helping them view such hurdles as valuable learning experiences. We also appreciate your support in getting children to practices and games on time with the correct gear.

At O.I.S., we expect our students to uphold IDEAL values at all times, and we ask our parents to model these same values while spectating. If you have any questions or concerns regarding a game, please contact the teacher in charge of that sport or Miss Johnston, Head of PE. Even when we disagree with an official's call, it is essential to remain respectful. As adults, we have a significant responsibility to model positive behaviour on the sidelines.

On Thursday, 4 June, we have our Learning Conversations. These 15-minute conversations are an important part of our learning programme. They allow you, as parents, to be informed about your child’s progress and what they need to do to make further gains. We are asking you, if possible, to keep your child at home on that day, as the Learning Conversations will be from 8:00 am - 6:30 pm. If you are unable to keep your child at home, we have teachers who will supervise your child. Please contact the office on 03 4370822 to inform us if your child needs to be at school that day.

More information about these is in an article included in this newsletter, as well as how you can book for these Conversations.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend
