Tēnā koutou katoa, Malo e lelei, Talofa lava, Bula vinaka

It is hard to believe that next week we will be halfway through the term. We are now only one week away from our first group of students heading away on their first Year 8 camp, and we truly appreciate all your support, especially the parents who are heading away on camps with our students.

I would like to thank all of the parents who are supporting the school with those little things like correct school shoes or ensuring jewellery is removed before they leave home. Keeping on top of these small details is what helps keep our school expectations high.

At this week's assembly, I spoke to the students about how awe-inspired I am of our Winter Olympians. Their perseverance, courage, and resilience are totally impressive. I also spoke about how important it is to work hard to achieve goals and how critical it is to have the right people in their corner. Above all, we need to support our students to embrace challenges, to push themselves out of their comfort zone, and to try new things.

OIS offers a number of different opportunities, both sporting and cultural. The students find out about these via the daily notices. If your child is away and wants to sign up for something, but misses it, they must let their teacher or the teacher in charge know as soon as they can. Notices go out from school, and as you know, we do have cut-off times for notices coming back. Please support your child by signing these forms and reminding them to take them back to school. We don't want your child to miss out on an opportunity due to not having been organised to bring a notice back.

Emergency Drills and Contact Information

On Monday, we held our first evacuation drill, and it was wonderful to have the support of our local fire brigade. These drills are important to ensure we all know what to do in the event of an emergency. The other drill we will hold in the coming weeks is the shelter-in-place drill. More information about these drills and our emergency procedures can be found in our school policies on the school document website.

An important note for you as a parent is to ensure we have your correct contact information, especially an email address, as this platform is used as the main contact point for communication with parents/whānau.

I wanted to finish the week with a huge shout-out to our students, staff, parents, and members of our community who have supported a very positive start to the year. I am very privileged to be the Tumuaki of Oamaru Intermediate School and greatly appreciate your support.

Don’t forget to come along to our swimming sports on Thursday, come along and support your child.
