Principal's Message...

By Rebecca Meek | Posted: Thursday February 19, 2026

It's been an excellent start to the year, with students seamlessly adapting to the O.I.S routines and expectations. At O.I.S, we don't just value strong relationships; we actively cultivate and nurture them.

Often, one of the questions we get asked as educators is how we can help our tamariki if they are struggling with emotions or finding learning difficult. As adults, how we respond to our children when they have times of struggle or when they make inappropriate choices is one of the biggest ways that we can support our akonga. If we respond calmly and allow our children to share their feelings and struggles, it empowers them to solve problems alongside someone and start the journey to solve them by themselves. It could simply be asking your child, “I can see you are finding this difficult. What do you need from me to help you achieve or accomplish what you want?”

Our Board is meeting for the first time this year on Monday night. We have a brilliant, hardworking and supportive Board: Ben Stratford (Presiding Member), Sahra Swart, Shannon Moore, Damian Brown, Alex McLeod and Whaea Isabelle Raukete make up our very committed Board members. Our Board meetings are held on the last Monday of every month.

Late students

I know that there are times when this can’t be avoided, but I do think it is important that, as a parent, you are aware that getting your child to school on time does set them up for a positive day. Ensuring that your child is on time for school means that they get all the information that they need for the day and don’t miss out on any opportunities that are happening within the school. They also don’t miss the start of a lesson.

Our day starts at 8.45 am, so they’re needed here before that time to allow them to get to class and unpack their bag, also to connect with their friends outside of the classroom. See the attendance graph attached to lateness.

Biking and scootering to school

We are pleased to see so many students biking and scootering to school, but safe travel is essential. Please discuss the following with your child:

  • Bikes must use the roads, not footpaths.

  • Look both ways at corners before crossing, especially on a scooter.

  • Ride in a single file.

  • Biking students must wear a helmet.

  • Do not pull out between parked cars.

Students must know road rules, just like drivers of cars. We suggest reviewing your child's route and necessary precautions.
